I tried to win a scholarship into the Damn Fine Words writing contest a couple of weeks ago. I found out yesterday I didn’t win.
I would like to take a moment to congratulate the winners. Way to go, guys! And thanks, Rena, for that lovely comment!
I digress.
Tonight I’m going to talk about fears. Shay Fabbro, a classmate of mine from Kristen Lamb’s Blogging to Build Brand class, blogged about her fear of spiders. That inspired me to write about my top five fears. Thanks Shay!
Here they are in no particular order:
1. Loud Noises
Loud noises like thunder, balloons popping, or fireworks spooked me as a kid. I couldn’t stand being caught outside in a thunderstorm because I’d have a panic attack. To this day I can’t give you a concrete answer as to why loud noises frightened me so much. It might have something to do with good hearing, or something else entirely. Sometimes I think loud noises are like a physical shock my system can’t handle as easily as everyone else. Thankfully, it’s a fear that has faded over time. (I can tell you I’m a fun one to watch a scary/action movie with because I flinch when guns go off, and when things jump out of there hiding places.)
2. Marionettes
There is something about these dolls that creep me out. I think it has to do with their exaggerated facial features and expressions. They look …untrustworthy and definitely not cute!
3. Ventriloquist Dummies
I don’t mind the ventriloquist dummies that look like Muppets. Muppets rock! The dummies that resemble their human counterparts, and have eyes that move back and forth, bother me. I think those types of dummies are as untrustworthy as marionettes. They’re definitely up to something, and I wouldn’t want to turn my back on one. Who knows what they do when you’re not looking?
4. Ladders
I can walk under ladders and stand near them without worry. However, I can’t say the same when I have to climb to the very top. My legs start shaking once I’m at the top and I automatically think I’m going to fall off. I feel the same uneasiness if I’m walking up a steep staircase. But I still force myself to walk up those steps, or climb that ladder.
5. Writing
I’ll admit I’m afraid of writing. I find blank pages intimidating, and the concept of baring my soul to the entire world terrifies me, which will make my blogging journey very interesting!
What are your fears? Why are you afraid of them? What steps have you taken to conquer them? I’d love to hear from you!

Glad I inspired you! And I totally agree with the ventriloquist dummies! And clowns…*shudder*
I think my fear of spiders comes from the time when I was a kid, carried a black widow spider to her, and she slapped the darn thing out of my hand!
Hurray! I finally found someone else who thinks ventriloquist dummies are creepy! People look at me like I’ve grown a third eye whenever I mention that.
*shudders*Luckily we don’t have Black Widow Spiders where I live. The only spider I can’t stand where I live in Alberta are Daddy Long Legs, or Harvestmen. (Technically they’re not actually spiders. They’re more like close cousins to them.)
In no particular order:
1. “Just Say No to Spiders” , I don’t walk around with a button stating that, but I should!
2. Chicken fat (Although this might not really be as much a fear as it is just disgusting.)
3. Having my eyes poked with sharp things
4. My Children’s safely
5. Rip tides
Marionettes and Ventriloquist dummies are totally creepy. And clowns. Clowns are really creepy.
Great post Kristy! Thank you!
Now you mention it those ventriloquist dummies are creepy. Maybe it’s the murder mysteries where they’ve featured that contribute to the feeling. I completely stopped gardening when we lived in Funnel Web spider territory, I simply couldn’t make myself go near it.
Good post Kristy! I’m with you on the Ventriloquist dummies. And Thunder (but really the lightning – thought it was coming to get me) had me cowering from a young age, something I rationalised myself out of by the time my children arrived (determined not to pass it on) and I’m so with Barbara on my childrfen’s safety, even though they are big enough to look after themselves now!
Great post, Kristy! It really got me thinking what my top 5 would be. I’d have to say spiders, snakes, tornadoes, food poisoning, and marriage.
I have hated clowns ever since Poltergeist and It. Creepy looking puppets come in a close 2nd
Ventriloquist dummies are definitely creepy. Remember that Buffy episode when it/they came to life? *shudders*
LOL! I was thinking of that very episode when I wrote this post!
I’m afraid of spiders and heights. I always keep a can of Raid in the house and I’m going to try rock climbing soon.
I hope you have fun rock climbing!
